The season looks at the history of BID, its recognition in the ICD-11, the development of different explanations for the condition, and the ethical questions surrounding autonomy, suffering, medical refusal, disability, identity, and institutional authority over the body.

🎙️ A new episode of Contested Bodies is now out.
Episode 4 — BID and Gender Dysphoria asks why some forms of body-related suffering become recognised as questions of identity, autonomy, and legitimacy, while others remain medically and morally suspect.
This episode examines the comparison between Body Integrity Dysphoria and gender dysphoria. The aim is not to treat them as the same condition, but to ask why two forms of profound body-related distress have received such different clinical, ethical, and cultural responses.
The previous three episodes built the ground for this comparison:
Episode 1 — History 1: What Is BID?
The early history of BID, from contested descriptions to the emergence of a recognised diagnostic category.
Episode 2 — History 2: What Is BID?
The development of neurological, psychological, social, and ethical explanations of BID.
Episode 3 — Mapping the Body
Body image, body schema, embodiment, and the question of how a body can feel both one’s own and profoundly wrong.
Episode 4 now turns to identity, authenticity, recognition, and justice.
At its centre is a difficult question: if BID is recognised as a real condition, what is the ethically relevant difference that justifies treating it so differently from gender dysphoria?
