hello , ik live in belgium ,and some weeks ago, while wrapping my bent right leg i suddenly remembered as a child doing the same thing ,almost 50 years ago , and looking in the mirror to look at my right leg ending at my knee and feeling that that was how it should be..i had no one to talk about it so i pushed that feeling away..until some weeks ago ,it came back stronger than before .since then i try to simulate with crutches and a plaster around my bent leg , wheel chair ...it helps for a moment but the feeling to have an amputation below knee stays strong...in belgium there seems to be no expertise on bid so i try to go to umc in amsterdam , but the rules and administration takes - too - much time ...meanwhile bid demands several hours a day to cope with...

Interesting testimony. Did the BID return more strongly after you remembered this childhood experience, and before that memory resurfaced, had the feeling generally remained under control?

Research has examined the relationship between BID, mental images and autobiographical memories, although much remains unknown.

Elsewhere I have written about the power of mental imagery and its impact on body image and the body schema.

thanks for your reply ...the feelings as a young teenager when i stood in front of the mirror with my bended leg and two broom sticks were so overwhelming and i could not talk with anyone , so i " deleted " that image and began to make plaster casts around my other left side leg and casted this leg more than 100 times during decades and made also body extensions from other body parts that i connected to my left side leg .." to express the inexpressible "...until 1,5 month ago i plasterd  -after decades - my bent right leg and recognised that my leg " ended " at my knee and it was like the feeling of a  big bang and as if all the missing peaces of the puzzle of my life all fell simutaniously in their place ..since then i simulate with wheel chair , crutchs and i create ( at least i try ) my own prosthetics ...i now realise that this need for amputation and prosthetics never left me  were always there somewhere in the shadow ...

i try to cope with my bid , and every day is different , i simulate a couple of hours a day , with varying degrees of satisfaction...sometimes the urge for an amputation is very demanding and i fantasize / dream of  me lying in a hospital bed with my stump wrapped up with bandages ...bid  is so complex ..

during this period , the wave is back again ,realising that for me prosthetics are my way to express myself in the most authentic way and more specific bionic prosthetics ....that feeling to be partly human , partly bionic as my true identity....i wanted to share those feelings and wondered if someone recognises them...
